On the Ukraine issue, lately the US has been sending weapons to Ukraine, heightening tensions, creating panic and even hyping up the possibility of warfare. In stark contrast, China has all along called on all parties to respect and attach importance to each other’s legitimate security concerns, strive to resolve issues through negotiation and consultation, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying’s Regular Press Conference on February 23, 2022
A key question here is what role the US, the culprit [始作俑者] of current tensions surrounding Ukraine, has played. If someone keeps pouring oil on the flame while accusing others of not doing their best to put out the fire, such kind of behavior is clearly irresponsible and immoral.
The US has been increasing tensions and hyping up war for some time. Do you know how many arms and ammunition the US has sent to Ukraine?Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying’s Regular Press Conference on February 24, 2022
Those who follow the US’ lead in fanning up flames and then shifting the blame onto others are truly irresponsible. As the culprit, the person who started the fire should think about how to put it out as soon as possible.
International media lately mentioned many times that George Kennan, former US ambassador to the Soviet Union, suggested to the US government in the 1990s that expanding NATO up to Russia’s borders would be the most fateful error of American policy. Regrettably, the US government turned a deaf ear to this. Thomas Friedman, […]. Tulsi Gabbard, […].Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Regular Press Conference on March 3, 2022
Those who created the problem should be the ones to undo it. [解铃还须系铃人。] We hope the culprits of the crisis [危机的始作俑者] can reflect upon their roles in the Ukraine crisis. They should earnestly shoulder due responsibilities and take real actions to ease the situation and resolve the problem instead of shifting the blame to others.

The legitimate security concerns of any country should be respected, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be jointly upheld.Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Regular Press Conference on February 22, 2022
Certain countries should ask themselves: When the US drove five waves of NATO expansion eastward all the way to Russia’s doorstep and deployed advanced offensive strategic weapons in breach of its assurances to Russia, did it ever think about the consequences of pushing a big country to the wall?Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying’s Regular Press Conference on February 23, 2022
Recent history saw China invaded by the Eight-Power Allied Forces and other colonialist powers, which left behind indelible poignant memories of national humiliation. Just a little more than 20 years ago, the Chinese embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was hit by NATO bombing, which killed three Chinese journalists and injured many more. NATO still owes the Chinese people a debt of blood. Even today, China still faces a realistic threat from the US flanked by its several allies as they wantonly and grossly meddle in China’s domestic affairs and undermine China’s sovereignty and security on issues including Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan.Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying’s Regular Press Conference on February 24, 2022
At the same time, China believes that one country’s security cannot be at the expense of others’ security; still less should one country flagrantly undermine others’ sovereign security for his absolute security advantage. All countries’ legitimate security concerns should be respected.
China believes that the security of one country should not come at the expense of the security of other countries, still less should regional security be guaranteed by strengthening or even expanding military blocs. The Cold War mentality should be discarded completely. The legitimate security concerns of all countries should be respected. Given NATO’s five consecutive rounds of eastward expansion, Russia’s legitimate security demands ought to be taken seriously and properly addressed.Wang Yi Expounds China’s Five-Point Position on the Current Ukraine Issue
Ukraine should function as a bridge between the East and the West, not a frontier in big power confrontation.
The Cold War mentality should be discarded completely. The legitimate security concerns of all countries should be respected. Given NATO’s five consecutive rounds of eastward expansion, Russia’s legitimate security demands ought to be taken seriously and properly addressed. I hope I’ve made it clear enough.Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Regular Press Conference on March 1, 2022
China always believes that one country’s security cannot be at the expense of others’ security, and security of one region cannot be achieved by expanding military blocs, Wang stressed.Xinhua: Chinese, Ukrainian FMs hold phone talks over Ukrainian situation
[The UN General assembly resolution] does not highlight the importance of the principle of indivisible security, […].Explanation of Vote by Ambassador Zhang Jun at the UN General Assembly on the Resolution on Ukraine
The final settlement of the Ukraine crisis requires abandoning the Cold War mentality, abandoning the logic of ensuring one’s own security at the expense of others’ security, and abandoning the approach of seeking regional security by expanding military blocs. It is important to give full attention and respect to the legitimate security concerns of all countries, and on that basis conduct negotiations to put in place a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism.
Sancties zijn illegaal
As we have repeatedly said, we believe that sanctions are not an effective solution to solve problems. It is China’s consistent position that we oppose all illegal unilateral sanctions. China and Russia will continue to carry out normal trade cooperation following the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Regular Press Conference on March 1, 2022
I would like to reiterate that China firmly opposes all illegal unilateral sanctions, and believes that sanctions are never fundamentally effective means to solve problems. […] We ask the relevant parties not to hurt the legitimate rights and interests of China and other parties when handling the Ukraine issue and the relations with Russia. China and Russia will continue to conduct normal trade cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Regular Press Conference on March 2, 2022
Aanval is geen invasie
I’m sure you have noticed that Russia stated that in its special military operation in Ukraine, its armed forces will not conduct any missile of artillery strikes on any Ukrainian city.
[…]Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying’s Regular Press Conference on February 24, 2022
Here is another question. Western media used the word “invasion” for Russia’s operation. When the US took illegal unilateral military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan without the mandate of the UN and caused massive civilian casualties, did you use the word “invasion” or some other word?
