De verschrikkelijke Russische invasie van Oekraïne wordt met de dag een grotere humanitaire ramp. De focus ligt natuurlijk op de voortgang van strijd en het menselijk leed. Mijn bijdrage aan onze pogingen om te begrijpen wat er gebeurt, beperkt zich tot wat ik kan uitleggen over de Chinese houding, die de Financial Times omschrijft als ‘pro-Russische neutraliteit’.
In mijn eerder stuk verwees ik al naar de zorgen in Brussel over het Chinees-Russische revisionisme dat spreekt uit de gezamenlijke verklaring van 4 februari. De houding van Peking tijdens de huidige crisis versterk allee maar het gevoel in Europa dat China partij kiest.
Hoewel het erop lijkt dat Peking wist dat er iets zou gaan gebeuren, is het niet duidelijk dat Xi Jinping op te hoogte was gesteld van het hele invasieplan. Of China werkelijk is gefopt door Poetin, kunnen we nu niet met zekerheid stellen. Op alle speculatie over hoe ongemakkelijk het leiderschap van de Chinese Communistische Partij (CCP) zich zou voelen bij de oorlog heb ik wel een antwoord: laten we gewoon lezen wat ze zelf zeggen.
Amerika is de schuldige
On the Ukraine issue, lately the US has been sending weapons to Ukraine, heightening tensions, creating panic and even hyping up the possibility of warfare. In stark contrast, China has all along called on all parties to respect and attach importance to each other’s legitimate security concerns, strive to resolve issues through negotiation and consultation, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.

Recent history saw China invaded by the Eight-Power Allied Forces and other colonialist powers, which left behind indelible poignant memories of national humiliation. Just a little more than 20 years ago, the Chinese embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was hit by NATO bombing, which killed three Chinese journalists and injured many more. NATO still owes the Chinese people a debt of blood. Here is another question. Western media used the word “invasion” for Russia’s operation. When the US took illegal unilateral military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan without the mandate of the UN and caused massive civilian casualties, did you use the word “invasion” or some other word?
